The best of Alentejo on a plate

Food is important in Alentejo – and rightly so. This beautiful region is slowly but surely establishing a reputation as a foodie’s paradise while its fresh, local and hearty culinary staples have stood the test of time and draw a growing number of travelers to the south. But there’s still so much more to Alentejo food, only a bite away.

The food in Alentejo is not the most elegant or sophisticated. It is like the region and its people: unpretentious, simple and delicious, with ingredients such as black pork, cheese, olives and rich-tasting olive oil, smoked meat, and wild mushrooms. Often called peasant food, Alentejo food is strongly based on local produce and its cuisine pays homage to the field workers who used to labor in the farms and large estates.

Down south

João Portugal RamosA 20-minute drive away from historical Beja, Herdade dos Grous will offer a complete taste of Alentejo food and wine, with a sophisticated combination of award-winning wines produced at the estate and a truly traditional meal in the company of Herdade dos Grous’ chef at the estate’s wine cellar.

Nearby Herdade da Malhadinha Nova is a famous wine boutique hotel in Alentejo, with a both traditional and sophisticated wine cellar where you can have different wine tastings while enjoying an assortment of country sausages and cheeses.

In the heart of Alentejo

Not far from Évora – Alentejo’s main city and university town – Adega Vila Santa is part of João Portugal Ramos Group. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the large vineyards and taste some of the most renowned Portuguese wines, finishing your visit with a traditional Herdade da Malhadinha Novameal prepared just for you, where regional products such as meats, sausages and cheese find their perfect pairing with João Portugal Ramos Wines.

Only a short drive away, Monte da Ravasqueira is one of the most famous wine producers in Alentejo. You can visit the vineyards, winery and wine cellar – while tasting some of the best wines of Alentejo – paired with a picnic or a meal featuring the best flavors of the Alentejo region.
